So Many Choices, Where Do I Start?

It can be overwhelming when you come to a Ketubah marketplace like Ketubah.com and see over 900 options. Where do you even begin?

But there’s no ‘rule’ for Ketubahs.

How Much Does a Ketubah Cost? What to Expect at $200, $400 and $600+

$200 or Less: Budget Ketubahs

OK, time for me to level with you.

Yes, it’s possible to get a Ketubah for under $200 USD. But I don’t advise it. In my experience talking to Ketubah buyers, the craftsmanship isn’t that great. Usually there’s no proofing going on and so the texts can end up with mistakes.

I once heard a story about a Rabbi who rejected a couple’s Ketubah, and wrote a new one on a napkin at the wedding ceremony. Unfortunately, the Ketubah text had their Hebrew names printed incorrectly!

When opting for a cheap Ketubah, here are some of the issues you might find:

• Often, the materials are not of archival quality and will begin to fade within a few years.
• Some of the art will be computer generated (AI) and if it’s not, it’s likely that the artists aren’t getting paid a fair rate – if they’re even getting paid at all.
• Cheaper Ketubahs are often just text, and you miss out on having artwork around the text that will add to its charm.
• It’s also a real risk that the text isn’t suitable, is poorly translated or is formatted incorrectly.
• You may have to supply the Ketubah text yourself, which can lead to errors in the Hebrew or Aramaic.

$200–$400: Heirloom-quality Ketubahs

If any of the issues in the previous price bracket worried you, you’ll be happy to learn that you can get heirloom-quality Ketubahs starting at $200-400.

This is the bracket where you can expect a Ketubah of archival quality. This means it should stand the test of time, and you can proudly display it on your wall for the rest of your married life. 

Paying only slightly above the bare minimum lets you unlock the following features:

• You should get an heirloom-quality print that won’t fade for decades to come. This means using archival pigment inks on fine art paper.
• You can access an atelier where artists are paid properly, and the product is made in an ethical manner. This is a non-negotiable for us at Ketubah.com and our network of 75 Ketubah artists.
• At this price, you’ll often get a comprehensive service that includes preparing and proofing the text. This is something we offer through our library of Ketubah texts.
• If Ketubah texts are included, then you can expect texts to be Rabbi-approved for use in Orthodox, Conservative, or Jewish Reform ceremonies – as well as other interfaith, secular or LGBTQ+ weddings. $400–$600: Laser-cut Ketubahs

From $400 and up you can expect Ketubahs to be heirloom-quality and come with additional design features. For example at Ketubah.com in the $400-600 we start offering laser-cut Ketubahs.

The difference with laser-cut designs is in the artistic technique and the overall design. Laser-cut Ketubahs are still made with heirloom-quality materials, but the laser cutting process creates intricate, structural, or layered designs that elevate the Ketubah text itself to become part of the artwork.

$600–$2,000: Premium Ketubahs

From $600 and up, you can access truly premium designs. We’re talking layered, sculptural designs. And often gold leaf, pearls, and crystals.

The closer you get to $2,000 you’ll also have the option to have your Ketubah designs cut into materials other than paper.

Within this premium bracket, you can expect the following:

• Layered laser cut designs – sometimes up to 18 layers
• Additional elements added by hand such as gold leaf, pearls and crystals
• You’ll be able to have your designs cut into wood or etched on glass

$2,000–$5,000: Fully Customized Ketubahs

If you really want to push the boat out, you can find Ketubahs upwards of $2,000 for designs that are fully bespoke and customisable. At Ketubah.com we don’t offer many designs in this bracket. It’s more common if you commission a specific Ketubah artist for a one-off piece.

If you want something truly unique and special, then this might be for you. But be warned, it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll also get assistance with the Ketubah text — and choosing which Ketubah text is right for your ceremony matters more than most couples expect. You may or may not get archival quality and great customer service.

The Ketubah “Error” that Can Happen at Any Price Point 

As I already said, you need to make sure your Ketubah text is printed correctly. It should be properly formatted – especially if you’re celebrating a Conservative or Orthodox wedding, where the Ketubah is seen as a legal document and the Ketubah signing ceremony follows strict requirements.
