Richard Bernstein Collection

Richard Bernstein (1939–2002) was a pioneering American Pop Artist best known for creating over 189 iconic cover portraits for Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine from 1972 to 1989. His distinctive technicolor style captured the glamor and extravagance of New York’s celebrity culture during the Studio 54 era.

After earning his M.F.A. from Columbia University, Bernstein debuted in the 1960s alongside contemporaries like Warhol, Sol LeWitt, and Robert Rauschenberg. A true innovator, he pioneered digitally created art as early as 1983 with his portrait of David Bowie and was later commissioned by the United Nations to design a postal stamp for the 1990s. His works are held in the permanent collections of major institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery.
